If a customer has ever asked where their order is, or if you’ve been the one awaiting a delivery, then you know the importance of tracking. Thankfully, Stamps.com has a simple method for tracking packages, and FedEx has their own page for tracking packages sent with their services.

Three ways to track with FedEx

When on the FedEx tracking page, you’ll see three ways to track your package. Each is a little different and may only appear on certain deliveries.

Tracking with a tracking number

This is the most common way you’ll be tracking your package. A tracking number is the number FedEx assigns to your package once it gets into their system. Enter this number into either the Stamps.com or FedEx tracking tools, and you’ll see the status of your delivery.

Tracking with a reference number

You’ll search with a reference number when you don’t have a tracking number, which can occur if the sender has created a label, but FedEx hasn’t gotten the package in their system yet. Once again, you’ll need to take this number to FedEx’s tracking page and enter it along with the country the package is destined for.

Tracking with a TCN

A Transportation Control Number (TCN) is a number associated with orders flowing through the Defense Transportation System (DTS). With the TCN and the ship date, you’ll be able to track it through FedEx’s tracking page.

Tracking statuses

It’s important to understand what your package status means. With this knowledge, you can better understand your package’s situation and communicate effectively with your customers. Some statuses like “Your package is in transit” are self-explanatory, but others like “Your scheduled delivery is now pending” may raise some questions. FedEx has a chart that explains all of their statuses you can refer to.

What is a door tag?

Door tags are physical receipts FedEx leaves if you miss a delivery. You might have gotten a door tag if you weren’t home for a delivery, weren’t able to provide a signature, or if your delivery driver couldn’t find a secure place to leave your package. The door tag will provide details and additional information specific to your package. You’ll still be able to track your package as you would normally, but additionally, you can text “follow” and your door tag number to 48773 to receive text updates around your package from FedEx.

Your customers may ask where their delivery is or when they can expect it to arrive. With Stamps.com, you can get ahead of this situation. Sign up for a free 30-day trial and set up automated emails that include all the shipment info necessary for your customer to track their order.
