Why are postage
meter contracts so complicated?
It's simple – postage meter companies have gone out of their
way to make them complex! Each contract is different and there
are hidden fees in any one of a hundred different places. The
result: it is almost impossible for you, the customer, to find
out how much you are really paying.
Stamps.com wants to change that – no hidden fees, no special
inks, no long-term contracts – just one low price every
month. It's simple and that's the way it should be.
No more hidden fees
Where do postage meter companies hide their fees? Everywhere!
Special ink cartridges – these can cost
up to $0.10 per print! Look on the box or online at the number
of impressions your cartridge is expected to yield and divide
by the cost – it's astonishing. Stamps.com uses the standard
ink used in your desktop printer and ends up costing about $0.001
per print. Special postage meter ink is about 100 times more expensive
than even the most expensive inkjet printer ink!
Scale rentals and extras – Beyond the postage
meter, there are a range of additional pieces of hardware that
you may be charged for. The number one example is the scale. Can
you imagine using a postage meter without a scale to weight your
mail and packages? No! So why are you being charged extra for
the scale? Shouldn't it come with the postage meter? That's why
Stamps.com offers a free digital postage scale to every new customer.
Equipment insurance, shipping and handling and maintenance
agreements – these additional fees may be added
to your monthly bill and can add significantly to the total cost.
Some are one-time fees, like the $25 to ship your postage meter
to you or to replace it if something goes wrong (yes, you pay
for replacement shipping, not them). Other charges are every month,
like equipment insurance (up to $12 per month, which you don't
have to get from them, but they make it more difficult to use
someone else).
Reset fees – Reset fees are "processing"
or other charges added to the amount of postage you buy. For example,
if you load $200 into your postage meter, there is often a $5-10
fee that is charged on top of the postage. Many current sales
reps will tell you that they no longer charge reset fees, but
most existing meter contracts still have them. Look at your bill
or your invoice the last time you reloaded postage into your machine
to see what you are being charged.
Charges to update postage rates and other software maintenance
agreements – Many postage meter companies charge
you to change the postage rates when rate increases happen! You
don't have a choice, because most postage meters won't even work
after a rate increase unless you have done the "software
upgrade." And, as you know, it only takes about 30 seconds
for them to do it. It's really just another excuse for them to
charge you a fee.
Automatic annual price increases – Many
postage meter companies will raise your rates every year depending
on how much postage you used in the prior year. Here's the theory:
the more that you are actually using your postage meter, the more
you probably need it for your business. They can raise the price
every year and you probably won't cancel because you need it.
They've got you right where they want you.
Charges for a Company logo or seasonal images
– If you want to print a logo or other message next to your
postage, meter companies will charge you up to $95 per image!
Actually, the cost to them is minimal and it uses a lot more of
their expensive inks, so they win both ways. With a Stamps.com
solution, images and logos are free – add as many different
looks to your mail as you want!
At Stamps.com, we deliver a simple, no-nonsense postage solution
that saves you money every month and helps you focus on the parts
of your business that really need your attention – not searching
through every invoice for hidden charges.
